Tokyo International School is an IB Continuum World School. We are fully authorized to deliver the prestigious IB Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program. TIS is not just any IB school. Our commitment to the IB and our expertise in IB philosophy and teaching practice is deeply-rooted at all levels of our organization. Members of our team work in collaboration with the IB as teacher trainers, consultants and accreditation visitors.
As a non-profit organization, learning and well-being alone drive our decisions. Our teaching methods are research-based, effective and innovative. Our programs develop mathematical literacy, information literacy, digital literacy and the necessary dispositions of successful, lifelong learners. We nurture balanced, confident, well-rounded, conscientious and happy individuals. A TIS education allows students to pursue their passions. This includes access to an exciting after school activities program.
Inspired by traditional Japanese cedar and bamboo, our modern campus is bright, open and welcoming. Enterprise grade wireless internet benefits the entire campus. Our virtual environment together with progressive educational architectural design fosters team-teaching, idea sharing and collaboration.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not currently hosting in-person tours at our campus. This service will be resumed once the pandemic is over. Please contact our admissions team about virtual Open House opportunities. In the meantime, please step into our campus virtually with the help of this video.
Tokyo International School (TIS) was founded in 1994 as a pre school with just five students enrolled. The students would learn lifelong skills, concepts, and values that could be easily transferred across the world and would equip them for a rapidly changing, international future. TIS would serve the many mobile, expatriate families in Tokyo.
Since its inception, TIS has always been forward-thinking and striving to improve. It was the first international school in Tokyo to offer a one-to-one laptop program, and technology remains integral to teaching and learning. The school was accredited by the Council of International Schools in 2004. It was authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB), Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 2005 and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 2007. In 2017 we gained non-profit school status and recognition by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Culture as a Gakko-Hojin (Incorporated Educational Institution).
Tokyo International School is a non profit school, which is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
We are a fully authorized, International Baccalaureate World School, catering for students from Kindergarten 1 (four years old) to Grade 8 (fourteen years old).
