Parent Community

TIS is a partnership between school and home. Our parents fully support the values, mission and learning of their children. TIS parents attend all teacher conferences and significant learning events which involve their children such as learning exhibitions and graduations.

Not all parents will volunteer and socialize. However, if getting involved, having fun, organizing projects and the international community life is your thing, TIS offers a family-friendly, inclusive environment for interested parents! TIS alumni often highlight the close knit community as something that makes our school outstanding and an aspect that they really miss.

Parent Volunteers

Our parents association is known as the TIS Family Community (TFC). All TIS parents are automatically members of the TFC. Parents who chose to be actively involved support families entering Japan, organize social events for the community, organize fun events for our students, raise money to buy exciting ‘extras’ for TIS students, and support TIS affiliated charities and projects. One such charity is Playground of Hope, a non-profit that provides children from at-risk communities such as children’s homes and disaster zones with access to essential outdoor play equipment. The TFC is always looking for new initiatives.

New parents are welcome, encouraged and empowered to add to the community spirit with new ideas. The core volunteer group of TFC is welcoming and inclusive. Families regularly come and go, as such being an active member of the TFC is an opportunity to get involved or to simply socialize.

TIS families come and go. Typically once new parents settle and get over the initial shock of moving countries, they often decide to join in the fun. They are made very welcome. Such parents become active volunteers sometimes for the long term but also just for a particular task or event. Projects include our annual Cherry Blossom Fair, fundraising committee and coordination of parent education workshops. Other regular volunteers include class homeroom parents, library helpers (moms and dads who read to our younger students) and field trip participants.

The Social Life

TIS teachers often joke that TIS parents have even more fun than our students! Parents are regularly organizing events communicated through TFC volunteers and open to everyone who is interested through the TFC Facebook Group. Parents who wish to get involved can enjoy cocktail evenings, sake tasting, shopping trips, running club, taiko drumming club and much more. Please refer to our Voices web page to get a feel for our friendly, welcoming community.
