Our oldest students are fifteen

Teaching, Collaboration and Technology Integration

Specialist Middle Years Program teachers teach Mathematics, English, Science, Individuals & Societies, Art, Music, Drama, Physical & Health Education, Japanese, and Design. All students also take a Service as Action class and an Advisory class, which focusses on personal and social-emotional development. All teachers integrate technology into teaching and learning. Technology is seen as an important tool in Middle Years Program – each child brings their own MacBook device to school. Middle Years Program students benefit from a range of support staff including teaching assistants, a counselor, a librarian, a learning support teacher and an English as an additional language support teacher.

The IB Middle Years Program

TIS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School delivering the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in Grades 6, 7, 8 and 9.

The MYP curriculum framework begins with the premise that students are agents of their own learning and partners in the learning process. It prioritizes people and their relationships to build a strong learning community. MYP students use their initiative to take responsibility and ownership of their learning.

By learning through inquiry and reflecting on their own learning, MYP students develop knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and dispositions which make a difference to their own lives, communities, and beyond. The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make connections between their inquiries and the real world. Service learning is a key component of the MYP.

"It helps me come to understand different cultures, different religions and different ideas of how people see things."
Aya - Grade 8

The TIS Tigers

We compete against other international schools in the greater Tokyo area in sports such as soccer, netball, cross country, volleyball and basketball. Despite our relatively small middle school division our TIS Tigers are a serious force to be reckoned with. We regularly make friends in teams representing larger schools stop in their tracks – literally!

"They don't tell you the answer, they try to get you to the answer."
Timo - Grade 8

Apple Distinguised School

Tokyo International School is a non profit school, which is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
We are a fully authorized, International Baccalaureate World School, catering for students from Kindergarten 1 (four years old) to Grade 8 (fourteen years old).
