Welcome to the Middle Years Programme (MYP). We offer all five years of the International Baccalaureate MYP. We are a school section of approximately 130 students learning in Grades 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Our youngest students enter the MYP when they reach eleven years of age. Our oldest students are sixteen years old when they leave Grade 10.
We are proud to be an IB Diploma Programme Candidate School. In August 2025, we will expand to include Grade 11, followed by Grade 12 in August 2026, allowing us to serve students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Specialist Middle Years Programme teachers teach Mathematics, English, Science, Individuals & Societies, Art, Music, Drama, Physical & Health Education, Japanese, and Design. All students also take a Service as Action class and an Advisory class, which focusses on personal and social-emotional development. All teachers integrate technology into teaching and learning. Technology is seen as an important tool in Middle Years Programme – each child brings their own MacBook device to school. Middle Years Programme students benefit from a range of support staff including teaching assistants, a counselor, a librarian, a learning support teacher and an English as an additional language support teacher.
TIS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School delivering the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grades 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
The MYP curriculum framework begins with the premise that students are agents of their own learning and partners in the learning process. It prioritizes people and their relationships to build a strong learning community. MYP students use their initiative to take responsibility and ownership of their learning.
By learning through inquiry and reflecting on their own learning, Upper School students develop knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and dispositions which make a difference to their own lives, communities and beyond. The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make connections between their inquiries and the real world. Service learning is a key component of the MYP.
Tokyo International School is a non profit school, which is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
We are a fully authorized, International Baccalaureate World School, catering for students from Kindergarten 1 (four years old) to Grade 8 (fourteen years old).
